This one is not my idea. I found the recipe for this Cannoli Christmas cottage in our local supermarket leaflet but made some changes since the kids are not into walnuts that was suggested to add to batter in original recipe. This is why I used cocoa batter made with hot water as I did for our Festive Cannoli Cake Roll  .

I guess the first thing that occurs when think of cannoli house are cannoli shells but this is not the case here. This Christmas cannoli is made with cannoli filling. Mascarpone version, not Ricotta cheese.

Also, to make cutting the slices easier, I skipped mini chocolate chips.

I stick to the original recipe when it comes to the door and the window. Here are the packages of cookies I used:

If you are inspired to make the changes and use some other decor ornaments, feel free to do so. Be it Santa on the roof, coloured ornaments, small chocolate bars or any other Christmas decor, arrange the house with your children to enjoy holiday season.

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 18 Lady fingers for the roof
  • 1 rounded cookie for the window
  • 1 rectangular cookie for the door
  • Powdered sugar to dust the cottage, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / 356 F.

  2. Cover jelly pan (10 x 15 inches) with parchment paper and spray it. Leave aside.

  3. In medium sized bowl, mix egg whites with sugar until stiff peaks form.

  4. Slowly add flour, baking powder, salt, cocoa powder, egg yolks and water.

  5. Pour your batter into prepared pan and bake for 8 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  6. Leave to cool. While it’s cooling, prepare the filling.

  7. In a medium sized pot, on slow heat, combine flour, sugar, and milk. Bring to boil stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Let it boil for 2 minutes and leave aside to cool.

  8. In a medium sized mixing bowl, mix butter to become creamy. Add orange zest, Mascarpone, and vanilla extract. Mix to get silky cream.

  9. Once your milk cream is cold, combine it with butter mixture.

  10. Cut your cocoa batter to ribbons of 4, 4, 3.5, 2 and 1.5 inches.

  11. Place first 4 inches ribbon on your platter and cover it with cream.

  12. Cover with another 4 inches ribbon and cover it also with cream.

  13. Continue with 3.5, 2 and 1.5 inches and cream to build a cottage.

  14. Using the rest of your cannoli cream, spread it all over your little house and cover with lady fingers to form a roof. You’ll need some cream to fill and garnish the top.

  15. On the front of the house, place rectangular cookie for the door and rounded for the window.

  16. At the end, you may dust your cottage with powdered sugar to addsome white Christmas spirit.

Recipe Notes

This cake is the best if left in the fridge overnight to cut and serve the other day.
