This is an easy, budget friendly way to feed a crowd with Italian pasta! The batch we had is stuffed with prosciutto but you may also use cheese tortellini or any other type you love. Three cups of pre packaged tortellini feed four adults, once boiled and pan fried!

What are tortellini?

They are pasta, round shaped, filled with pork loin, prosciutto, mortadella, or cheese. Quite similar to these are tortolloni. The difference  is in the size. Tortelloni are larger than delicate little tortellini. While tortelloni is traditionally filled with a combination of vegetarian ingredients, tortellini usually features meat filling.

This recipe shows pan fried tortellini version. We prefer them because they are smaller.

You need to boil your batch of tortellini before deep fried or pan fried. Please cook them al dente, which means two minutes less then package instructions say. The reason to do it this way is to avoid soggy texture once fried covered with bread crumb mixture.

What are different types of tortellini?

Tortellini pasta falls into the category of filling-wrapped pasta. Variations include: cheese tortellini, chicken tortellini or baked tortellini. Generally it is ‘fatter’ than ravioli. Like cappelletti, tortellini is roughly ring shaped and is made by folding a single piece of pasta dough. For 44 types of pasta to learn about go here .

What is the difference between tortellini and ravioli?

Ravioli are usually square, with a flat underside and rounded top, with edges cut at a sharp angle and sometimes frilled with a fork. Tortellini are ring or navel-shaped, at times resembling a tiny croissant or even a wonton.
