Slightly different dress but the same Italian well known flavor! After festive days, this is ideal way to use ham and cheese leftovers.
Easily done. I bake it quite often since it is very tasteful when hot and cold as well. If you do not have mortadela in your fridge, Frankfurters or any salami or sausage instead are OK; or even roast leftovers to give additional rich flavor.
There is an excellent recipe for the dough also: Crazy Dough for Everything . If you decide to make this one, 1 lb is enough.
Pizza Cake (Using Ham Leftovers)
- DOUGH ingredients:
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cup warm water
- Pinch of sugar and salt
- 1 tsp sunflower oil
- In a bowl, make a dough using all the above mentioned ingredients and leave it to rise.
- FILLING ingredients:
- 2 medium sized onions, finely chopped
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 cup semi – hard cheese ( Gouda or Tilsit type, cubed )
- 1 cup ham, cubed
- 1 cup mortadela, cubed
- 2 tsp dry origano ground black pepper and salt to taste
- 1 egg yolk with few drops of water
In a pan, fry onions, finely chopped in 2 Tbsp of olive oil just to make them slightly yellow.
Add ham, cheese and mortadela to fried onions and mix. Add origano, black pepper and salt. Before salting, try the mixture because ham and mortadela are already salted.
Cut off 1/3 of dough away for Pizza cake cover.
Oil the baking pan.
Turn the oven on to reach 180 degrees C/ 356 F.
Roll 2/3 of dough to fit to the bottom of a baking pan and to cover the sides.
Put the filling in taking care that the dough sides remain up along the pan.
Roll remaining 1/3 of the dough and place it on the top.
Pinch the edges together so that filling doesn't leak out during baking.
Mix egg yolk with a few drops of water to have egg wash.
Eggwash the top of Pizza cake.
Bake for approx 35 minutes in preheated oven at 180 degrees C/ 356 F.
