Sweet Cherry Cookie Squares from Scratch is cherry pie wrapped in cookie dough for great sweet cherries dessert recipe. Almond slices on the top are just great!
For the filling, combine sweet cherries, sugar, lemon juice and corn starch in medium sized pot with thick bottom, boil, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes. You'll get 1 ¾ cup of cherry filling. Leave aside.
On clean flat working surface, combine flour, baking powder, butter, sour cream, sugar, egg and lemon zest, using your hands.
Preheat the oven to 180 C / 356 F.
Cover 8 x 8 inches brownies pan with baking paper and butter it.
Cut off 2/3 of cookie dough and tap into the bottom of the baking pan.
Bake for 10 minutes and take it out.
Pour cherry filling on the crust and arrange dough patches on the top, using 1/3 remaining dough after step 5.
Sprinkle with almond slices over the top of squares and bake for 17 minutes.
Take out, cool completely, cut, dust with powdered sugar and enjoy.
